About Kate Chappell

"And all I offer here is the distilled poetry of my existence..." Claude McKay, Poet Laureate of Jamaica, 1890-1848 I have been a reporter since 1998, covering mainly business and politics. I have also capitalized on the many skills journalism requires to become an all-around communications specialist. In addition to being a professional curious person and communicator, I have a bad case of the travel bug and can't seem to stay put. Finally, I have put my skills to work as a volunteer in the community wherever I have lived. Now, follow me as I combine these compartments of my life in Kingston, Jamaica, where I am a writer, reporter, journalist and lecturer.

Tea party

Some days when I am working, I stop for a snack break and tea.

Recycling crew

We dropped our plastic bottles off at Jamaica Environmental Trust’s office recycling depot. We talked about what recycling is and why it is important. A lot to think about.

Oxygen

Oxygen tanks sit outside the UWI Hospital on Monday, Aug. 23.

“No movement” day 2

Today is the third no movement day. Yesterday I went on the road to donate blood. The roads were not busy, but there were a surprising amount of cars, hopefully people going to get vaccinated. The entrance to UWI was crowded with people, some connected to oxygen tanks. On a positive note, the parking lot of a vaccination site was packed with cars.

“Jamaica announces coronavirus lockdown with health system on brink”

It is a “no movement” day today. My latest for Reuters, from Friday.

TS Grace

We watched Grace pour water on us. The next day was dry and sunny. No injuries or deaths reported. Another storm escaped.

“Strengthening storm Grace pummels Jamaica with heavy rain, wind”

My latest for Reuters.

Grace is mostly gone, but yesterday was rough. Heavy rain and winds, flooding, trees down and landslides. And this was only a tropical storm.

Tree-planting

An avocado seedling planted by Minister Floyd Green in Hope Gardens, part of the three million tree-planting initiative, I assume.
