About Kate Chappell

"And all I offer here is the distilled poetry of my existence..." Claude McKay, Poet Laureate of Jamaica, 1890-1848 I have been a reporter since 1998, covering mainly business and politics. I have also capitalized on the many skills journalism requires to become an all-around communications specialist. In addition to being a professional curious person and communicator, I have a bad case of the travel bug and can't seem to stay put. Finally, I have put my skills to work as a volunteer in the community wherever I have lived. Now, follow me as I combine these compartments of my life in Kingston, Jamaica, where I am a writer, reporter, journalist and lecturer.

Riding

When things seem a little heavy these days, which is almost all the time for most people, I think, there are moments of escape everywhere. At the end of the day, when it is cooler and the sun is setting, we go outside. The light is golden and the air is less oppressive. All that matters is walking to the top of the hill and seeing how fast we can ride down on our new bikes. And I forget the troubles for a short while.

On guard

JCF officers keep an eye on an intersection in Whitfield town. They are also holding sanitization kits handed to them by Health Minister Tufton.

Trying to survive

This man rode his kayak up and down the beach all day, trying to get a sale. It looked like he was selling wood statues. But with hardly any tourists, he was mostly left bobbing in the calm surf.

“What it was really like”

This is a first-person account of traveling to Jamaica during the pandemic. It’s fine, but not much detail and relies on cliches…
