About Kate Chappell

"And all I offer here is the distilled poetry of my existence..." Claude McKay, Poet Laureate of Jamaica, 1890-1848 I have been a reporter since 1998, covering mainly business and politics. I have also capitalized on the many skills journalism requires to become an all-around communications specialist. In addition to being a professional curious person and communicator, I have a bad case of the travel bug and can't seem to stay put. Finally, I have put my skills to work as a volunteer in the community wherever I have lived. Now, follow me as I combine these compartments of my life in Kingston, Jamaica, where I am a writer, reporter, journalist and lecturer.

I attended the Black Lives Matter protests over the weekend, covering them for Reuters. Here is the link to the story and the photos are not from Reuters (although a Reuters photog attended and took pictures, one of which accompanies my story). Rather they are from a young man named Ajani Hickling. He has a growing interest in photography and I wanted to showcase his latest work.

“Sea, sand and social distancing: #Caribbean reopens to tourism”

Jamaica’s borders will reopen to tourists on June 15. This is my latest for Reuters- it is part of a region-wide look at the tourism industry reopening post-COVIC.

“How to Make this Moment the Turning Point for Real Change”

Just a quick word…

The world is heartbreaking place a lot of the time even if you pay a just little bit of attention. It is undeniably heartbreaking right now for everyone, especially non-white people, who are finally, maybe, just maybe, being heard a little bit. I pray and hope this momentum lasts. Here is a list of resources and places you can go to learn and help.
