Media critique Tuesday

Some media critique today. Check out the top of Sunday’s Jamaica Observer. The story highlights the fact that five female police officers are now in leadership roles. “Woman constables,” as they are called here, as opposed to just constables, are still remarkable. They are regularly referred to as “woman constables” in the media. I’m not sure why the modifier is necessary, but I guess it is because police officers are still considered to be solely a role occupied by the male gender. There is a lot of social analysis that could be done here, but suffice to say that at least things are changing, albeit slowly.

And then check out the horrifically offensive caption for the photograph on the right. “Physically challenged or not, this PNP supporter was adamant that she had to attend the conference.” No words for this one.
