Downtown Kingston, Sept. 2, 2021. I went downtown to get some pictures for a story, right as a confrontation between a taxi driver and police ended in someone being killed. A good part of the downtown area was crippled with traffic as a major artery was cut off with yellow police tape. But life goes on. Commerce goes on. Downtown is a whole different world, seemingly immune to COVID.
You’re put and about a lot more than most and it’d be useful to give some anecdotal views of COVID protocols observance. I think a lot of people don’t see the reality and exaggerate non-observance (esp if they see partial, which may get treated in their minds as none). Your picture, albeit a snapshot, eg shows a much higher rate of observance downtown than many often relate.
I think there are two different worlds, as always, two Jamaicas. Downtown, when I was there, at least in terms of the protocols of social distancing and “tan ah yuh yaad” could have been a snapshot from 2019 if one ignored the masks. In some places, most people wore masks, while in other pockets, they weren’t wearing them or they were under their chin.
