About Kate Chappell

"And all I offer here is the distilled poetry of my existence..." Claude McKay, Poet Laureate of Jamaica, 1890-1848 I have been a reporter since 1998, covering mainly business and politics. I have also capitalized on the many skills journalism requires to become an all-around communications specialist. In addition to being a professional curious person and communicator, I have a bad case of the travel bug and can't seem to stay put. Finally, I have put my skills to work as a volunteer in the community wherever I have lived. Now, follow me as I combine these compartments of my life in Kingston, Jamaica, where I am a writer, reporter, journalist and lecturer.

This is Jamaica

In the yard at our house alone, we have limes, mango, apples, breadfruit, bananas, nonis, pomegranate, coconut, plantains, ackee, almonds and cherries. It will never get old. These are cherries we picked today for my daughter.

‘Tell me pastor’

Since I have been in Jamaica, journalism has generally improved in terms of how individuals are treated, the responsibility and sensationalism  of the content. Except for the Jamaica Star. It continues to be sensational, exploitative and disrespectful. This is example is irresponsible almost to there point of criminality. A local pastor dispenses advice regularly, and his latest column has people very upset, with good reason, as he is dismissing the crime of rape and telling the victim to stay quiet about it. I would like to know the thought process of the editors who approved this.

Windrush generation in photos

Good for the Guardian for shining so much light on the Windrush generation. Here’s a lovely feature on a photographer who took many of their portraits.

Jamaica’s Distrust

This is an excellent piece on the Windrush generation in today’s Guardian.
