My latest for the Guardian

As a freelance journalist, I pitch to a range of outlets on a regular basis  I never really know who is going to bite   All the stories I pitch seem relevant and important to me, but they are often turned down  It can be a difficult process

This is my latest for the Guardian

Authoroties are reviewing the rules about what women can or can’t wear in public spaces. Check out my piece here.

Beautiful Ottawa

A4883505-97FC-4662-B053-851E915F1A55Ottawa is growing up and is beautiful now. Not that it wasn’t before…I ran downtown last week and was greeted by a plethora of new construction, renovated buildings, hundreds of tourists and young people everywhere. I suspect the demographics are shifting as well.

Summer days

We lay under the trees and watched the ducks and listened to the birds. Felt the grass on our skin and smelled the flowers. Played hide and go seek and danced. It was perfect.

Hope

No matter how many times she tries, she always believes that this time she will catch the bird.

Reviewing policy

Follow up from yesterday. Seems the PM is listening. Good work Sue!

Access to service denied

This is some important work Susan Goffe has done about accessing government services or even just buildings while wearing clothes deemed inappropriate. It may seem trivial. But it was not trivial to me when I was nearly denied entry to the hospital with my days-old daughter when she was critically ill. I was wearing a nursing tank top and the guards did not want to let me in. Luckily I had a shirt on hand but I hate to think what would have happened had I not. There is no law or written convention for most departments. It is arbitrary and discriminatory.

Family friendly

There are so many family friendly amenities here. Change tables everywhere. Parks. Playgrounds. Green spaces. Safe, wide sidewalks. Even playgrounds where people leave their toys in a communal system. Kingston needs all of these things to make it a place in which children feel safe and nurtured.
